Mar 27, 2021 mar 25, 2021. 10. note: per allan lacer and common sense when you hone a hollow ground skew you ride both edges of grind arc and that way there will not be any micro bevel on the cutting edge where as a flat grind can only be honed with a micro bevel. the micro bevel will affect the quality and the control of the cut.
Various jigs exist for 10 wet grinders but theyre all designed for straight or upswept edges rather than forward-curving like scythe blades--even the mighty tormek lists scythe blades under items that they tell you to grind freehand. but creating a good hollow is critical to mowing with ease, so i whipped up this little jig for my grizzly g1036 to make the task easier.Tormek t-4 wet grinding wheel. grinding mill the result is a bevel edge with a completely flat instead of a hollow surface. always use the anti-corrosion concentrate included in the water when sharpening with water. use water when sharpening with the diamond wheel as it prolongs the life of the wheel.
Step 1 - cbn wheel for grinding - to the edge of the blade. it is warmer than a tormek, but cool enough to hold in the hand, and much much faster in the grind. the final hollow is slightly deeper 8 radius vs 10 radius, and the upside of this is that a honing will last slightly longer.

A hollow grind means metal is only removed at the secondary cutting edge, as well as at the spine to a lesser degree. as a hollow grind assumes the shape of the outer diameter of the grinding wheel that sharpened it, different diameters of wheel will produce a less or more hollow grind. in other words, a large wheel creates an extremely shallow grinding mill.
These small grinders produce a pronounced hollow grind, which was considered desirable for finishing hand held with bench stones. this is another example of high speed dry grinding thought trying to be applied to the tormek.
May 20, 2018 2 i use a tormek on my hand plane blades and chisels because of its ability to hollow grind the bevel. after hollow grinding the bevels it’s far easier and faster using a water stone, or sandpaper, or diamond stone, or oil stone to refresh your edge since when you sharpen, you don’t sharpen the entire bevel, only the front and rear edge.
Grinding on a wheel provides a particular challenge in that you have to hold a consistent position or else the angle of your grind changes. various jigs exist for 10 wet grinders but theyre all designed for straight or upswept edges rather than forward-curving like scythe blades--even the mighty tormek lists scythe blades under items that they tell you to grind freehand.

Hollow grinding revisited tormek. jul 05, 2017 a third view is to establish the primary bevel with the tormek sg grinding wheel and then add a micro bevel using the tormek sj polishing wheel. in my opinion, establishing the two reference points with a hollow grind to allow alignment of the blade on a flat stone does not reflect tormek get price.

Sharpest edge is via a hollow grind that leaves the minimum amount of steel to hone. honing on a minimum amount of steel is also more friendly to the honing media - less effort is required as there is less surface area, and it is possible to use less sophisticated.
Feb 26, 2021 hollow grinding the back is an effect like a japanese chisel which makes it less work with the fne stones when working the back. i intend to stay 1/4 or 3/16 away from the cutting edge, so that part will be flattened along with a bit of the spine when i work the back with flat stones.Jul 05, 2017 grinding with the tormek is efficient that the labor saving micro bevel is not needed. in general, i agree with this. another viewpoint is using the tormek to establish the bevel and then switching to flat bench stones to create the keener micro bevel, usually to 8000 grit.May 18, 2007 you can hone quite a few times before the hollow is gone and grinding is necessary. sharpening should not require spending big money. imo it is sold as a black art that needs all manner of paraphernalia that is designed to take cash that could be better spent on grinding mill.
